Tourney Winners story at Amistad-Pros vs. Joes
Finally a break from the fishing and work just for a little while… so as you may have heard Johnny Myers and I competed in a Proz vs. Joez tournament circuit. Which is a neat organization that Big Bass Mania hold. Helping out the troops is always an awesome thing to do and that’s what this group is concentrated around. Can’t say enough and thank them for what they do!!
Well where do we start we have been taking it on the chin for the past 5 tournaments, only drawing one check!!!!! This past week was a different weekend though I went down to Lake Amistad with the attentions of getting my confidence back; and finding a pattern that will work. Not something like a swim bait bite which is either a make or break you kind of bite which we have been doing and I was fed up with it! We fished out of 2 boats during pre-fish which always a good thing cover more water if the tournament your fishing allows of course. I started out in the main lake and fishing some spots I have fished before. I had enough! no more! I turned off my electronics and went shallow fishing something that I haven’t done in forever, but was something I knew I could get some confidence back doing. Did I mention water tempt was 64 in the back of the creeks and air tempts were in the high 40s low 50s yes friggin freezing!!! I started fishing a zoom speed vibe, yes a small craw looking bait. Which was rigged with 100% trilene fluorocarbon 15lbs test on a Quantum 7’4 Heavy rod and 6:3 smoke reel. Can’t beat this setup for the cost and durability. I started off fishing grass in the backs which definitely paid off. After I started putting two and two together I realized with a full moon and 64 degree water tempt even though a major cold front had come through these fish just wanted to do one thing and that was doing there business this time of year and that was to spawn!
After I had a pattern down I went to another bait which as you may know bestbasstackle.com is the only carriers of these baits and that is a team plowboy jig! I was rigging it on a 7’11 heavy Abu Garcia VERITAS quantum Pt tour 7:3 and 20lbs 100% trilene fluorocarbon. I went again to the backs of creeks or hydrilla on the main lake that was still to the top if I could find it. These fish were in there and they were stacked! My best 5 fish for the day was well over 25lbs. I knew I finally had a pattern to make a win and definitely had my confidence back which is always an awesome thing!
DAY 1 went well as planned as for the weather it was horrible. We had to deal with wind hail and lightning never a good thing. The fish though were turned on I stuck with the 2 baits I mentioned and Johnny was either throwing the jig or a skinny dipper! We ended up having a little over 25lbs which was good enough for 2nd place for the day! Did I mention we had our electronics off and the hydro wave rolling shallow water really no need to have the electronics going!
DAY 2 well this day was just going to be a tough day of fishing blue bird skies post front and no wind!! We started off again in the backs. First fish was a solid 5 well maybe it wasn’t going to be a tough day!! Yea right!!! At 11:30 I finally put a 5th fish in the boat which we only had 9lbs with 5 not going to work if you want a win at Amistad. After both of us realizing we needed to take a chance we went to main lake and deeper water wow did it pay off. At 2:00 it was game over Johnny broke off a real good fish but followed it with a 6.8 and was it chaos after that. The hydro wave was on and it was culling time in a matter of 20 minutes we culled 4 fish and you have to realize last cast was at 3:00 yes we were pumped but knew we really needed to have another solid fish. BAM I boated a solid 3 ½ it was weigh in time!! Talk about a nail bitter. We ended day 2 with just over 21lbs. After all was said the results were in we had finally put one under our belt for the year 46.73 lbs was enough to take a first place finish just beating the other 2 team by ¾ of a pound!
What a fun tournament, with this win we qualified to fish the proz vs. joez at Toledo Bend. This time we will be fishing against each other and some of the pros on the elite series awesome feeling wait $125,000 check is what we will be fishing for if that doesn’t fire someone up I don’t know what will!
I want to thank my sponsors Abu Garcia, Berkley , Quantum, Bestbasstackle.com, Western Boat and Prop shop, AAO outfitter and also my friends and family for supporting me and helping me!!! Thank you all!! Special thanks also to my Team Partner Johnny Myers he seems to always keep me pumped and an awesome friend!! Or Brother!!
